The Secret Gate

  This is a little romantic poem about the dual nature of love – its public and its private aspect – sometimes known to, and sometimes hidden from, the lovers themselves.

Only we both know

The secret entrance

Below the castle moat;

A gate of bronze –

Both a way in that was

never closed to you, yet

Also a weakness in the

Castle defences. I left

It open; step in, the

Tunnel walls are firmly

Lighting your way;  phosphorescent;

An ever-gentle glow,

Like the sure, secret love of years.
