Exploring the “Fourth Wall”

Fourth Wall – an idea and a workshop exercise
Exploring the fourth wall can be tricky ! That boundary between stage and audience. A wall or a window? a window for the audience, a wall for the actors?
This debate as been raging for years. I like this exericse:
Take a short scene and rehearse it well – ideally block it and learn it – make it close to performance quality. Then perform through a number of repetitions:
1. On normal staging
2. As far upstage as possible
3. As far downstage as possible
4. In the space  between stage and front row in the audience
5. Among the audience (use some spare actors as audience)
6. Behind the audience
At each stage share yor experiences and feelings for each performance.
